Information Management

The Information Management (IM) Branch provides advisory services and support to the OCIO, government departments and supported public bodies on information management and protection to enable compliance with legislation and IM best practice.

The Management of Information Act directs appropriate records management practices to be followed by the IM Branch, government departments and supported public bodies. This includes the mandates of Information Protection and the Government’s Records Retention and Disposition process.

Responsibilities

The IM Branch has the responsibility to:

  • Develop IM policies and standards for government
  • Enable government compliance with IM legislation by assisting departments to improve their IM capacity
  • Provide IM consultancy services and support to departments
  • Provide direction on IM best practices, resource requirements and organizational structure on a government-wide basis
  • Set policies, standards and compliance monitoring around the protection of information
  • Ensure information protection is a key component in application development, support and operations
  • Work with officials from departments and public bodies to investigate, evaluate and adopt common IM systems and best practices
  • Provide advice on government records lifecycle management
  • Manage a semi-active records storage program for government
  • Manage the records retention and disposal process and the operations of the Government records Committee

Services

The IM Branch provides the following services for government departments and supported public bodies:

  • Provides Information Management and Protection advisory services and support
  • Assists departments in developing records retention schedules and manage the process for consideration and approval of schedules by the Government Records Committee
  • Manages the storage of semi-active government records
  • Supports the IM Community, consisting of IM representatives from government departments and supported public bodies
  • Provides awareness, outreach and training in the areas of IM and P
